BEST PRACTICES OF TILE LAYING

Surface Preparation :

Proper surface preparation is crucial for a long-lasting tile installation. Ensure that the substrate is clean, dry, level, and structurally sound. Remove any debris, grease, or loose particles. Repair cracks or uneven areas before starting the installation process.

Choosing the Right Adhesive :

Select the appropriate adhesive or mortar for the tile type and the substrate. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding mixing ratios and application methods. Different types of tiles may require specific adhesives, such as thin-set mortar for ceramic and porcelain tiles or epoxy adhesive for certain specialty tiles.

Layout and Planning:

Plan the tile layout before starting the installation. Take accurate measurements of the area and determine the layout pattern, such as a straight grid, diagonal, or herringbone

Consider any focal points or design features that may affect the layout. Dry-lay the tiles before applying adhesive to ensure a proper fit and alignment.

Cutting and Trimming Tiles :

Use appropriate tools, such as a tile cutter, wet saw, or tile nipper, to cut tiles accurately. Take necessary precautions to ensure safety and prevent damage to the tiles. Measure and mark the tiles carefully before cutting, and make small, precise cuts to achieve the desired shape or size.

Adhesive Application:

Apply the adhesive evenly using a notched trowel, following the recommended trowel size for the tile and substrate. Spread the adhesive in small sections to prevent it from drying out before placing the tiles. Avoid applying excessive adhesive, as it can cause uneven tile heights or adhesive seepage between the joints.

Grouting :

Allow the adhesive to cure before grouting the tiles. Choose a grout color that complements the tiles and apply it using a grout float, filling the joints completely. Remove excess grout using a grout sponge or cloth, and ensure that the grout lines are clean and properly finished.

Sealing (if applicable) :

Depending on the tile material, it may be necessary to apply a sealer to protect the surface from stains, moisture, or other environmental factors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific sealer product and reapply as recommended.

Curing and Maintenance :

Allow the tile installation to cure for the recommended period before subjecting it to heavy use or foot traffic. Follow proper maintenance procedures, such as regular cleaning with suitable products and avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the tiles or grout.
